Overview

The KENWOOD KAIROS is a compact, IP-based repeater for DMR Tier 2 and Tier 3 systems, from a single standalone site to wide-area multisite and simulcast networks. It is ideal for utilities, energy, education and manufacturing organizations that need wide-area coverage with a limited number of frequencies. KAIROS automatically switches between analog and digital, and the VHF and UHF models also handle analog and POCSAG paging and P25 Phase 1 conventional.

Key features

  • Multi-protocol: DMR Tier 2 and Tier 3, analog, analog and POCSAG paging, and P25 Phase 1 conventional (KA-160 and KA-450)
  • Automatic analog/digital switching based on the incoming signal
  • Fully IP-based architecture for multisite multicast or simulcast systems
  • RF linking for backhaul between sites where IP is not available; IP, UHF and VHF links can be mixed
  • Soft diversity receive for better coverage in fading conditions
  • Redundancy: 1+1 main and standby, or a secondary station that automatically takes over for a failed primary
  • 1–25 W at 100% duty cycle, selectable per channel; external power amplifiers available
  • Remote control and diagnostics, secure software upgrades, and SNMP for third-party network management
  • Compact and rugged: about 6.3 x 7.9 x 1.8 in and 3 lb, with built-in protection against reverse polarity, transients and overcurrent

We design and install complete repeater systems: site survey, licensing, antennas, combiners, linking and backup power.

Good to know

Is KAIROS a P25 repeater?

KAIROS is built primarily for DMR Tier 2 and Tier 3. The KA-160 VHF and KA-450 UHF models also support P25 Phase 1 conventional and paging. For full P25 Phase 1 and 2 trunked and simulcast systems, see our ATLAS P25 systems.

Can it do simulcast with only a few frequencies?

Yes. KAIROS supports conventional and trunked simulcast, so multiple sites can share the same frequencies to cover a wide area. That is a big advantage when licensed frequencies are scarce.

What if we do not have an IP network between sites?

KAIROS can link sites over RF using VHF or UHF links, and you can mix IP and RF links in the same network.

Can it run on backup power?

Yes. It runs on 12 V DC with low power draw, so it works well with battery and solar backup. We size the backup system for your site.
