Overview

ATLAS® is the KENWOOD Viking P25 radio system platform for counties, cities, utilities and statewide networks: P25 Phase 1 and 2 conventional, trunked, simulcast and hybrid systems built on a modern IP network. Instead of a central controller that can take the whole system down, every ATLAS site runs its own call control and simulcast functions. Sites discover each other automatically, heal themselves when a link comes back, and keep working if a neighboring site fails. Comserv Services designs, installs and supports ATLAS systems for Mid-South agencies, from a single repeater site to a multi-site county network.

Why ATLAS

  • No single point of failure: distributed call control means a failure at one site does not affect the rest of the system
  • Self-healing, auto-discovering sites: new sites configure themselves, and the network recovers automatically when links are restored
  • Simpler simulcast: comparator, prime site and wide-area controller functions run in software at every site, with GPS timing and layered redundancy
  • Flat, simple pricing: software features are included, with no fees per user, talkgroup, console feature or NMS client; growing the system only means buying the added equipment
  • Open P25 interoperability: works with all P25 Phase 1 CAP-tested subscriber radios, and with other vendors’ consoles, base stations and logging recorders
  • Built on common hardware: just four basic components, mostly commercial off-the-shelf, so spares and long-term support are simpler
  • Service plans: Basic, Essential, Premium and Premium Plus support, up to full network monitoring and management

A 1RU rack platform that hosts site controllers and gateways: conventional and trunking site interfaces with distributed call control, analog gateways for legacy tone and E&M equipment and recorders, and mobile radio gateways that let StarGate consoles control base stations on other systems, including analog, P25 and Viking16.

Good to know

Can our existing radios work on an ATLAS system?

ATLAS is designed to work with all P25 subscriber manufacturers, and EFJohnson guarantees coverage with all P25 Phase 1 CAP-tested radios. That includes Motorola, Kenwood Viking and other P25 portables and mobiles.

Can we start small and grow?

Yes. ATLAS scales from one site to statewide systems on a flat IP network. Adding a site, channel or console only requires the added equipment, with no added software license fees.

Can we mix in other vendors’ equipment?

Yes. ATLAS supports standard P25 interfaces, so you can use ATLAS components or a mix of other vendors’ consoles, base stations and logging recorders, now or later.

Who designs and supports the system?

Comserv Services handles the design, licensing, installation, programming and local support for ATLAS systems in the Mid-South, backed by Kenwood Viking service plans.
